@mecscomms is recruiting for a Fibre Design Engineer & Optical Fibre Planner in London. The role will provide technical consultation & subject matter expertise, including the specification, design, documentation & deployment planning for complex fibre optics network, FTTP & infrastructure projects. Purpose: Plan, design and deliver optical network infrastructure projects. Manage survey, tender, planning, design & delivery objectives to deliver multiple outside plant, fibre optics, telecommunication network, optical transport & FTTP projects.

Duration: Permanent, full time

Gross Salary: circa £45,000 basic + £4,000 bonus, pension, health, allowances, overtime & more.

The Fibre Design Engineer will engage on major fibre, FTTP & connectivity solutions for customers throughout the UK & Europe. As a subject matter expert, you will conduct situation & needs analysis, gather requirements, complete technical audits, produce technical designs & drawings including HLD design documents, create implementation & deployment plans & provide a high level of technical competency & consultancy, throughout the Fibre deployment.

You can expect involvement throughout the planning & delivery phase including all; site survey, tender, planning, documentation, design and deployment through to customer acceptance. This will include a significant amount of managing & supervising 3rd party construction and fibre engineering vendors to expedite the construction, cabling, fibre splicing & testing of equipment.


The Fibre Design Engineer & Network Planner will make critical strategic, operational and technical decisions throughout the project lifecycle & will be involved with:

• Customer engagement & partnering

• Requirements gathering, needs analysis & technical audits

• Capturing & interpreting customer requirements

• Definition of solution roadmaps & deliverables

• Design and review fibre optic network designs

• Production of detailed project costing & BoM

• Production of high-level design HLD

• Production of and installation diagrams

• Production of route drawings

• Production of cost and quote documents

• Management of network As-built data

• Fibre inventory analysis & management

• 3rd party relationship management

• Coordination of work permits and access agreements

• Support telecom civils construction methods and optical cable installations

• Purchase equipment and materials

• Manage projects & track project deliverable

• Manage project documentation & budgetary reporting

• Manage project governance, compliance & controls

• Perform Health & Safety and Quality Assurance audits

• Coordinating with design, presales, 3rd parties, customer stakeholders & other teams

• Overseeing the commission, build, install & implementation process for solutions

• Advanced root cause analysis and solution optimisation

• High end and complex 3rd line support where required

Candidate profile:

Candidates must have previous Fibre Design experience, gained with a Telco, Carrier, ISP, Optical Fibre provider or similar Network or Infrastructure environment. Your background & experience is likely to include as much of the following as possible:

• Technical experience of designing complex telecommunications, WAN, outside plant, fibre optic, optical networks, FTTP or similar core network infrastructure connectivity solutions

• Professional experience planning and designing fibre networks

• Producing technical designs (HLD) & network drawings / diagrams

• Familiarity with quotations, construction, RAMS and delivery processes

• Familiarity with construction documents and optical test specifications / results

• Any knowledge of GIS, As Build, Civils, Wayleave, Visio, Google Earth, AutoCad, Smallworld or Salesforce would be highly beneficial

• Candidates must possess a valid driver licence and be willing to drive to customer site where required.
